Ohio University Winter Quarter Events and More!

Hello GSS.  At our meeting on Monday night I discussed many activities available to make your life a little less chilly this winter quarter, and here is information on all the events, workshops, happenings and ideas for possible Grad Student Life events that I discussed:

Ideas for Grad Student Life events:

(If you like any of these ideas and would like to help make them reality, email ougssgsl@yahoo.com)

1. Grad Student Fitness – This idea springs from the free group fitness workshops offered at Ping Center and the resources available to us at the aquatic center.  If you want to get together with other grad students to work out or just have a good time doing some dance aerobics or kickboxing, send an email to ougssgsl@yahoo.com.

To see more information on the aquatics center, visit http://www.ohio.edu/recreation/ac/index.htm.

For more info on group fitness classes, visit http://www.ohio.edu/recreation/fitness/group_fitness_schedule_wtr010.html.

2.  Grad Student Movie Nights – The thought here is that some of us have cars while others don’t, and maybe we’d all like to see a new release or a popular film at the Athena Grand on East State St. or The Athena on Court Street.  If you’d be interested in group movie nights, carpooling, driving others to see films or any other aspect, please email ougssgsl@yahoo.com

3.  Arts for Ohio support – If you’re interested in attending OU fine arts performances with other grad students, send an email and we’ll get the ball rolling by building an integrated calendar on WordPress or Facebook where those interested in particular events can contact others who are interested.  We could also plan late dinner uptown after these events!

From the Arts for Ohio blog: “Ohio University College of Fine Arts’ Arts for OHIO strives to fully integrate the arts into the culture and fabric of Ohio University by offering students free admission to College of Fine Arts events while expanding and enhancing art offerings for our entire community. Plan to be emotionally moved, provoked, and inspired.” (http://artsforohio.blogspot.com)

4.  Dissertation Support Group:  This idea was inspired by Cynara Medina, Scripps College of Communication Senator.  Completing (or even starting) a dissertation is a challenging process.  This group would allow PhDs from all over campus meet to discuss strategies, difficulties, concepts, ideas and progress with those in similar positions to them.  This group would support PhD students in any stage of their degrees.  If you’re interested, send an email to ougssgsl@yahoo.com and I’ll work on getting a good space where we can form camaraderie and discourse in a healthy and relaxing environment.  *If there are masters’ students interested in starting a similar group for theses, shoot me an email and I’ll make this interest known at the next GSS meeting.

Do you have more ideas?  Send them my way.
